Cindy Whitmarsh Reveals Why Her Fitness System Works!
Cindy Whitmarsh interviewed by Doug Jackson for his Fitness Empowerment Newsletter which can be subscribed to at www.personalfitnessadvantage.com Doug Jackson: Cindy, thanks for taking the time today to do this interview with me. As you know, I originally contacted you after picking your book up and was really impressed with it. It's rare that I am able to purchase a bookstore book and get any new ideas, but I immediately put some of your ideas in to use with my clients. For those reading, how would you describe your fitness philosophy? Cindy Whitmarsh: The Ultrafit Nutrition Systems workout philosophy is about eating a sensible and balanced diet while maximizing your time and efforts in your workouts. In fact, I believe that nutrition is 70% of the way your body looks and feels. If you follow some basic Ultrafit nutritional guidelines, there’s no reason for you to be working out for hours on end. Set goals and cross train in your workouts to achieve maximum results! Doug Jackson: Cindy, I love it. You obviously feel very passionate about both exercise and proper nutrition. In fact, I remember reading about your start in fitness and the initial transformation you made. Would you quickly tell my readers about it? Cindy Whitmarsh: Definitely! I think my story is pretty easy to relate to. In 1994, I weighed 40 more pounds than I do today. The poor habits of eating too many simple carbohydrates, not enough protein, and not drinking enough water had led to a gradual and steady increase in my weight. It was hard to believe since I was teaching two aerobic classes a day at the time – how could someone so active be in such poor condition? Although I was certainly very active, I was also eating too much sugar and processed food. I was a walking example of someone who neglected to include proper nutrition in her daily life, and thought that I could work out intensely to make up for poor habits. Years later, I moved to San Diego and decided to start practicing what I preached. Through some trial and error, and a ton of research, I developed my nutrition plan, lost the 40 pounds and have never seen its return! Doug Jackson: I think many of my readers, especially the large number of trainers who subscribe, can empathize with that. What is the most common goal clients of your system have and why does your system work so well? Cindy Whitmarsh: My clients look to Ultrafit to help them lose weight, lean out, and increase lean muscle mass. Through this journey, they not only start to look better, but they begin to physically feel better with increased strength and energy (not to mention some boosted self-confidence!). The Ultrafit System stresses making complete lifestyle changes that are realistically maintainable in your everyday life. We also stress moderation – beating yourself up when you “cheat” (a term I hate) isn’t productive, and that usually leads to a cycle of extreme workouts to try and make up for it. I’d rather a client look at the big picture and set realistic expectations that work for them. Doug Jackson: Right on. What is the biggest exercise mistake that you see men and women making in the gym? Cindy Whitmarsh: The mistake I see it ALL THE TIME is neglecting to cross train. We all see the people in the gym who show up every day and do the same exact thing, and their bodies never seem to change! I mean, how frustrating must that be?! Cross training ensures that you’re challenging your body and forcing it to make positive changes. It also keeps you from getting bored! I never let myself do the same workout more than once a week, and I try to find different sources of cardiovascular exercise. Doug Jackson: Definitely. That's definitely a common mistake and I like your way of addressing it. How about nutrition? What's the biggest nutrition mistake that you see men and women making? Cindy Whitmarsh: Like I said before, nutrition is 70% of the game, and if you don’t pay any attention to it, you’re doing your body an injustice. Those same people who show up to do the same workout every day typically don’t put a whole lot of thought into their nutrition either. Eating right gives you the fuel you need to get through each day. When you eat right, your skin looks better, your hair and nails grow stronger, and your body feels stronger. All of this usually leads to an improved attitude and outlook. I see a lot of people take nutrition to extremes, and when you start cutting out entire food groups or reducing caloric intake too much, you’ve created an unpleasant and usually unsustainable situation for yourself. Weight loss or weight gain goals need to be realistic, menus have to be realistic, and the long-term plan has to be realistic. Doug Jackson: Good stuff, Cindy. Now, you've given my readers a lot of great information. What's your message to people who are waivering back and forth about getting on a good fitness program? How do you address the people who are sitting on the fence? Cindy Whitmarsh: What are you waiting for?!?! Honestly, I think a lot of people are intimidated by the whole concept of a fitness regimen or joining a gym. It doesn’t have to be such a hard-core commitment. Start slowly, even if it’s just by turning off the t.v. and taking a walk around your neighborhood. You set the rules, you set the expectations. If you want to just feel better, I promise that a little bit of exercise and good nutrition is going to go a long way. If you’re looking for a total body transformation, you have to make that commitment and go for it – nobody else is going to do the work for you! Doug Jackson: Excellent. Cindy, I do want to promote your book and your program because I like what I've seen. What are the programs that are available in Southern California ? And what program do you have that people can purchase even if they are hundreds or thousands of miles away from you. Cindy Whitmarsh: To begin with, anyone who may be interested in Ultrafit Nutrition Systems should visit www.ultrafitnutrition.com . All of our programs and challenges are explained in detail, and for those people who aren’t local to Southern California , we even have an online program. For those people who do live in San Diego , we have a program to meet every need. From one-on-one consults, to in-home nutrition and personal training, to large group challenges, anyone can find what they need. Doug Jackson: Cindy, thank for taking the time out of your busy day to share your experience of what works with my readers. I think you are an inspiration to many people.
