The Best Way to Cut Negative Stress Immediately
I'm just as passionate about the benefits of exercise on mental and emotional health, as its benefits on physical health. I like to teach about this through personal example so here's how I put exercise to use yesterday. I was unwinding at home last night after a productive day at work (had already gotten a strenuous strength training session in). Emily walked in and right away I could tell something was wrong. After a little prodding, she opened up and told me that someone close to her was criticizing some of our wedding plans and she was really upset about it. So my mood went from good to pissed off when she told me what happened. But I knew that it was pretty unproductive to end the day in anger. So I suggested that we go for a walk. I thought it might calm us down. She was up for it so we ended up taking a nice two mile walk around our neighborhood. By the end, we'd gotten some quality time in and both of us were much less angry (although still annoyed) at the criticism we received. So my question to you is: When was the last time you were upset about something? Could you have used some sort of exercise to make you feel better? Next time you need to get your head "right", get moving. Exercise helps our bodies manage our stress hormones more effectively and puts you in a happier, more relaxed state. Being someone who is naturally intense, I used to be known for being a "hot head". I've realized over time that to become better, we must manage our emotions better. Exercise should be a primary weapon in your arsenal of energy management techniques.
